It was the only engine not accounted for because Continental tried to buy them all back in the 90s looking for info, my friend called and Continental said "Oh thats there the engine is we dont support it. The one being built has a Continental watercooled 520. Most people want to make it something its not. It is cool, but it is not for the faint of heart. It is not forgiving if there is problems, and you have to watch bumping the prop too. The crashed one at my airport which had an Allison/RR 250 jet had a fuel control fail and he belied it in short of the airport. Most have crashed because of power failures. You need to be a serious person to fly it like you would be flying a biz jet. I think the big disappointment is it is not as fast as it looks. I have heard much of that from Glasair and Lancair builders. Big composite kits seem to be harder to put together than most people think big parts come in the kit but now you have to align 20-30' parts and if you get it wrong you screwed up half your airplane. Jackscrew stab trim, mid engine that has rare needed parts to drive the prop, constant speed prop at the end of a 8' driveshaft, retractable gear made from noes of a Piper Arrow and main from a Lake Amphibian, jackscrew flaps like you would see on a big airliner, speed brakes on and on. I work on one SR22 and you can tell it is from the same engineering minds. Although there was improvements made the VK30 has the same general wing as the SR20-22. I have some fringe involvement with a VK30 build and at the same airport one had crashed and use to sit on the ramp. The complete investigation into exactly what caused the crash may take up to two years, NTSB Spokesman Eric Weiss told SCVNews.I can talk either way on the Cirrus. The wreckage was transported to a secure facility for further examination. He did not see any smoke or anything fall from the airplane as it descended towards the ground.Įxamination of the accident site revealed that the airplane impacted terrain adjacent to a series of power transmission lines about 2.5 miles southeast of Agua Dulce. The witness further stated there was a distinct difference in engine sound from the first time he saw the airplane and when it went vertical. The witness added that when the right wing lifted, it sounded like the pilot “maxed the engine out.” The airplane pitched downward into a near-vertical attitude. He stated that as the airplane got closer to the mountains it looked like the wind had pushed the right wing up. The cross-country flight originated from Henderson Executive Airport (HND), Las Vegas, Nevada, about 1000, with an intended destination of Van Nuys Airport (VNY), Van Nuys, California.Ī witness, located in the vicinity of the accident site and accustomed to hearing/seeing air traffic, reported that he observed the airplane flying straight and level, about 2,000 ft to 3,000 ft above the ground. Visual meteorological conditions existed near the accident site, at the time of the accident, and no flight plan was filed for the flight. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. The airplane sustained damage to the fuselage and all the flight control surfaces. The private pilot and three passengers were fatally injured. On February 11, 2018, about 10:59 Pacific Standard Time, an experimental amateur-built Cirrus VK-30, N52TH, collided with the ground while maneuvering in the vicinity of Agua Dulce, California. Hastings, an experienced pilot from Winnetka, and his passengers were reportedly returning from a family trip to Las Vegas. Thomas Hastings, 65 Thomas Hastings’ daughter Amber Hill, 27 her husband, Jacob Hill, 25 and her daughter, Madison Hastings Saxelby, 9 were killed in the crash. National Transportation Safety Board investigators have released a preliminary report on the crash of an experimental aircraft that killed four people near Agua Dulce on January 11.
